A Georgia man arrested on charges of driving under the influence offered an unusual alibi to officers: he said his dog was driving.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a dog locked in a car in a store parking lot. When officers arrived, they spotted the dog, along with a can of gasoline in the car. The outside temperature was 99 degrees, and the temperature inside the car registered 123 degrees.

The dog was freed from the vehicle. Animal Control took custody of the dog.

When officers located the driver, Wesley Mark Terrell, 60, he appeared to be highly intoxicated, according to authorities. Terrell explained to officers that his dog drove him to the store to buy corn.

Terrell was charged with DUI and animal cruelty.
