House Bill 673 still needs to be signed by Nathan Deal, but it looks like it will go into effect July 1st. I have had a few people ask me to clarify the details so I have researched and this is what I have found. Basically it requires drivers to use “hands free technology” with the use of cell phones and other devices. This is what is prohibited with the new law:
1. Holding or supporting a cell phone or device with any part of the body
2. Writing, reading, or sending information on a device
3. Reaching for a device if it means that you are no longer seated
4. Watching or recording a movie or video. You are allowed to watch in regards to your navigation app.
You are allowed to speak or text using hands-free technology, use a GPS or navigation app, wear and use a smart watch, and use an earpiece.
You can use your hands if you are lawfully parked (not at a stop light). An another exception is if you are reporting a crime, fire, medical emergency, traffic accident, or hazardous road condition.
Hope this blog is clear about the new laws. Hopefully it will make our roads a little safer!
